Why is it that mothers, aunts, grandmothers and sisters feel compelled to tell expecting moms their worst stories about pregnancy and birthing? These stories can be troublesome and leave a negative impression on both mom and baby. The last thing you want is to be worried about the most natural thing in the world…having a baby. This is what your body was designed for, right? Soothing music, positive affirmations and self-hypnosis can make all the difference.

When we are afraid we depend on our sympathetic nervous system for fight or flight and all the blood goes to the muscles required to flee. Catecholamine (the stress hormone) is released and arteries to the uterus constrict. Birthing muscles become oxygen deprived and oxygen to the baby is limited. The baby’s head is forced against taut muscles which results in pain. Labour is prolonged.

Hypnotherapy helps to eliminate fear and therefore there is less tension both mentally and physically. When you revert to your parasympathetic nervous system, endorphins (the love drug) are released during birthing which act as a natural pain reliever. Labour is less tiring and often shorter because mom is relaxed. The baby is more alert because mom hasn’t had any pain medication. These babies are better adjusted and happier; they have been known to sleep and feed better.
